Of Camera

Steven Eastwood. dur. 14.40 mins. Original format S16mm. 2003

Of Camera explores the abortive attempts of two people to be together in the same space. Their disagreement is fuelled by technical difference: the woman exists on video and the man on celluloid. The story corrupts as the two realise they are incompatible and that they are being filmed and watched. Of Camera operates as a kind of cinematic Trojan Horse. It has the outward appearance of a functional noir thriller or failed romance, but scene-by-scene it collapses, revealing the sum of its parts and destroying the classical film vernacular it rode in on.

'Masterful pieces of work like Of Camera will leave you in no doubt that the short film is an exciting and viable force in cinema.'  Marni McArthur, Festival Programmer, Brief Encounters Bristol 2003
